9 Quick Market Listing Wins

A standout market listing is one of the easiest ways to attract users to your app. It’s often the first time users see your app, so it’s important to make a great first impression.

Whether your app’s been on the App Market for six months, or two years, it’s always a good idea to refresh and optimise your market listing to grow your app.

To help, we’ve put together some tips on how to improve your market listing.

1. Listen to users

Your app may already have some user feedback from reviews or customer support. What do users like about your app? Is there anything they don’t understand? Use this info to refresh your description or highlights, or explain anything that isn’t clear.

2. Check out the competition

New apps are being added to the App Market all the time, so we suggest keeping an eye on what their market listings look like – particularly apps that have a lot of installs and reviews, or ones similar to your own. Don’t copy, but do take inspiration.

3. Create an impactful lead image

If there’s one image to get right, it’s your main image. This appears most prominently in your listing, and might be the only one a user sees. A bold, solid colour linked to your brand works well as a background to any screenshots you want to show.

4. Sell the benefits of your app

Your app features should be short and snappy benefits, focusing on the unique user value (not your app’s functions). What makes it great? Why should they download your app over the others? What’s it going to help them with? Watch out for typos.

5. Create a promo banner

This isn’t essential, but we recommend having a promotional banner handy incase we decide to promote you in one of our collections like ‘Trending Now’. It should have a design with bold brand colours and screenshots that show the best of your app.

6. Make your teaser work hard

This tiny bit of text appears in several places and should tell users what your app’s all about in 46 characters or less. Get this right and you’ll get a user’s attention quickly – it might be the only bit of text they read before they choose to install.

7. Design a memorable icon

A high-quality, eye-catching icon can work wonders for your app. Clear and simple works best, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be unique and beautiful. Take inspiration from app icons on your phone – Apple and Google do a great job of minimalist design on their apps. Does your app icon tell the user what it does from the icon alone? E.g. an accounting app might use a calculator.

7. Make the most of video

Video content is one of the best ways to show the value and benefits of your app. We recommend including the app’s key benefits in the first few seconds to hook the user in. A video between 30 seconds and 1 minute is the optimum length – users tend to make their decision whether to download the app very quickly.

8. Record a demo

No need to hire a music studio – this is a video that shows your app in action, live on the site or dashboard. You could use the video to show how easy it is to install, or to run through some of its most beneficial features.

9. Don’t be afraid to adjust your pricing

You can change your business model and prices whenever you like. You could offer a free trial for your app’s premium features, or reduce the cost of your plans to attract more users. You can also offer users that sign up to a yearly subscription a discount.
